Spain recently took the steps to legalize online gambling, and the move is expected to turn out to be a smart one and will likely boost the country’s economy. Spain could enjoy as much as a €137.5 million boost in new income thanks to the law and has the country’s many gamblers eagerly awaiting the change in policy, Casino Times reports.
The first online gambling license was awarded to Casino Gran Madrid in the country’s capital area. The popular casino was certainly not taking things too lightly, either. They enlisted the help of software provider Playtech to help them create their games, which include such casino standards as poker and online roulette.
Legalizing online gambling seems like a logical choice for the Mediterranean country especially given the amount of players that they have. According to the news source, there were around 370,000 people who played in 2010, which was about a 33 percent jump compared to the previous year’s figures.
The move by Spain may encourage other countries, like the United States, to follow suit. A number of states in the U.S., including Nevada and New Jersey, have been pushing for similar legislation.
