The United States is inching ever closer to legalizing online gambling, and if and when they do, Las Vegas will be ready. According to the Associated Press, the city’s lawmakers have come up with proposed rules on how to regulate online casinos.
The move comes after the passage of a bill earlier this year that required legislators to have such rules in place by the beginning of 2012. It should also come as no surprise given Las Vegas’ reputation as one of the gambling capitals of the world. While a good first step, many lawmakers believe the regulations will see some changes.
"We can’t predict what may happen with any national legislation and we have attempted to frame these regulations in a manner that will provide appropriate flexibility," Mark Lipparelli, chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, told the AP.
Among the proposed rules is one that would tax online poker operators at the same rate as in-person casinos and one that would require operators to keep a log of who plays.
The new laws is springing up in places like Washington D.C. and New Jersey especially after the U.S. Justice Department has begun cracking down on illegal sites.
