Despite being closed due to flooding in May, the state-run casinos in Mississippi experienced a solid June. Bloomberg Businessweek reports that the 19 riverside casinos in The Magnolia State took in more than $91 million, while the 11 Gulf Coast casinos brought in an impressive $96.2 million.
The closures were a big hit to the state economy, and casino-goers from the state were left without some of the most popular facilities for a significant amount of time. Still, the rebound is encouraging given that some players may have stayed away thinking the casinos were not yet open.
According to the news source, the jump in revenue is a sign that the economy may be back on its way to recovery. Specifically, Nevada casinos enjoyed a much better month of May this year than they did in 2010.
Gambling has been especially popular in Pennsylvania, which recently legalized table games at 10 casinos across the state, including the popular game of roulette. The state reported bringing in more than $81 million in revenue in 2010 – the first year it offered the new games.
