Though many countries across the European Union (EU), have legalized gambling, most have different regulatory laws. In an effort to make things more uniform, EU members have taken to finding a way to make things easier to understand for all parties involved, Casino Advisor reports.
Perhaps the biggest area of contention is that most casinos and individual countries want to remain somewhat autonomous while still adhering to the laws. However, the EU wants to be sure that customers’ best interests are in mind and that they have a certain level of protection in place.
"I want an EU-wide framework that offers a minimum not low level of protection for consumers," Steffano Mallia, who works for the European Economic and Social Committee, told the news source. "But member states should be able to go further if they want."
Although some progress is being made between the two sides, the news provider reports that there is still a long way to go until an agreement is reached. The EU could come to a decision sometimes in 2012, experts say.
