The commercial casino business continues to push and advocate for new laws to regulate online poker. This industry is valued at approximately $6 billion, according to The Associated Press.
The industry is hoping that each state will be able to decide if these online casinos can be licensed and legal. In addition, regulating it the same way actual casinos are may also be beneficial, according to the media outlet.
However, chief executive Frank Fahrenkopf of the American Gaming Association is optimistic that the new bill will go through, as regulations have already started to be made, the news provider reports.
According to The Huffington Post, the defense lawyers for a Utah banker and a businessman, who were indicted on gambling charges, are trying to persuade a federal judge that online poker is not considered gambling.
"The players compete against each other on a level playing field, using an array of talents and skill to prevail over their opponents," the lawyers wrote, the news source reports.
In addition, the lawyers explain that this isn’t a form of gambling – unlike online roulette or blackjack – because the players in one or another can control the outcome based on their skill level.
